Learning to love the skin you are in a time in history where society still judges us by the outward appearance can be truly difficult. You are singled out by color, size and your name rarely matters anymore. Your skin is your history they say. It maps out your struggle your past and your battles.
What if I told you that your skin was the glorified gift-wrapping paper. Expensive but not as important as what is inside. Skin is the biggest organ of the body. Not only is it important but for most people it is their identity. Our identity is not just skin color. We are far more complexed than that. Our identity is entangled in who God created us to be.
We were all created in God's image. The master potter created a work of art with multiple intricacies and complexities. We are art. Living, breathing, and moving. God created us from the earth and breathed life into us. Our creation was so specific, and so intentional. He created us to have dominion over everything. His sons and daughters to rule over land and animals. God gave us power, authority and a purpose. With his loving guidance we all have a unique path to take. Some never get where God promised them and some do. What determines where you end up is the power of choice.
The power of choice controls everything. Choose a side. Make a decision this is part of our power. From the first day he created us he gave us the power of choice. God educated Eve and Adam in the garden explaining to them the authority that they had. God gave them the power of choice. Eve's choice in the garden caused a generational consequence. She was tricked and her decision altered her future. Lucifer was successful in deceiving Eve to want more than what she had already inside. He made her feel like whatever she had was not enough. Before the conversation in the garden of Eden, Eve was confident and knew who she was. After eating from the fruit, she felt instant shame. Sin caused the shame. SHE knew her purpose before eating the fruit. Lucifer planted doubt in her. Despite of her already having dominion over all life she wanted to be like God.
Lucifer wants you to forget who you are and what you were created for. He wants you to make bad decisions to alter your future. He plants doubts and fear as a strategy to keep you from ever living the life that God designed. He uses trauma to hinder progress and create anger. God our maker, sent his son to die on the cross. This gave us grace. He extended grace through Jesus' sacrifice so that we can have another shot at our purpose. He gave us choice. Our God does not like to see us tricked, sad and in despair. He has an open-door policy. A way to connect. A way to remember what we were created to do.
This life is full of distractions. The enemy wants to kill steal and destroy. If we don't love who Christ created us to be we may never get to see the promise, he made to us. Self-hate, confusion depression, sadness all ways to make you feel like you don't belong here. You do belong. God created you intentionally. He even knows the numbers of hair strands that you have. Dark skinned or light skin means nothing. Our identity is deeper than the shallow color of our skin. Our identity is kingdom. It doesn't matter what color we are. It matters what choice we make. Whose team we choose. Love the skin you're in. Embrace every part of you. You were made with a purpose and God knows your name.
